Different parts of the world are recovering at different speeds from the crisis caused by the Coronavirus. Under the most positive scenario the virus will succumb either to natural immunity or vaccination immunity. Some experts say that in the end, Covid-19 will be just another common cold. Unfortunately, we are not there yet. And it’s not just human health which is impacted by the virus. Drastic measures to contain the virus led to far-reaching lockdowns and transport restrictions. The restrictions on the free movement of people and goods led to an enormous misallocation of production means. Shipping containers sitting empty at the wrong port and goods lying idle in warehouses elsewhere, awaiting transport. As a consequence, getting hold of a scarce container can cost up to 600% more than it did before the pandemic, hurting businesses all over the world. And it is not just the means of transport that are in the wrong place at the wrong time. It’s people, too. In this issue of Poultry World, Ranjit Singh Boparan – often nicknamed Britain’s ‘chicken king’ as founder, owner and president of one of the largest chicken and food producers, the 2 Sisters Food Group – sounds the alarm. Due to a shortage
of workers in the processing plants, chicken meat supply is falling short of demand. He warns of a “serious food crisis”. The reasons for the staff shortages are multi-facetted: with workers sick or quar- antined, finding employment in other booming sectors or just unable to get to their workplace, as processors often rely on foreign labour. It all goes to show that agriculture, in general, and the poul- try industry, specifically, cannot operate without open borders. Fabian Brockötter, editor Poultry World
