Keeping it cool

Fogging systems are a common sight in broiler farms, but they are an exception in layer houses. That didn’t stop Dutch layer farmer Klaasjan Salomons from investing in such a sys- tem. After experiencing some extreme summer temperatures with subsequent drop in per- formance he was looking for a solution. With water fogging during peak temperatures he is now able to reduce the house temperature by up to 3°C, just enough to keep performance at the predicted level. The system automatically comes into action when the inside temperature reaches 30°C and shuts off at 28°C. Installing only took one full day of work and an invest- ment of about € 4000. According to the farmer the system gives him peace of mind during extreme temperatures.
