40 ▶ PIG PROGRESS | Volume 37, No. 3, 2021 On-demand: Webinars on heat stress...
How can management be better pre- pared for heat stress? And are there specific nutritional measures to atten- uate the effect of hot climatic condi- tions? These questions were addressed at a recent webinar on heat stress, which is available to view on demand through
www.allaboutfeed.net. Dr Bruno Silva (third from the left on the picture) kicked off the webinar. He is professor of swine nutrition and en- vironmental adaptation at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Having discussed why farm animals in general suffer from heat stress, he touched on a series of measures which can be taken to mitigate the effects of heat stress. He discussed how to make clever use of the surroundings and en- vironment, water pools, the use of sprinklers and bathing, forced ventila- tion, evaporative cooling systems, cooling pads and water cooling.
...precision feeding
How can we know exactly what feed formulation works best on-farm? And how can technology help make finisher sites more efficient? Feeding automa- tion can make the difference – and that was the exact theme of a webinar that is now available to view on-demand. The webinar was hosted by Pig Progress in cooperation with Nedap Livestock Management. “Harvesting data made easy,” was the catchphrase of the presentation by Chiel van Lenthe (left on the picture), product manager at Nedap. He introduced the company’s solu- tion ProSense, a highly data-driven approach of automated performance testing, which is often used by research farms or genetics companies to choose the pigs with the highest potential. The solution follows each and every pig individually through their ear tags, leading to a lot of data about how pigs grow. He summarised a range of
The next speaker was Wim Wanzele (left), nutritionist at the market sup- port team of Agrifirm. He focused his attention on all farm animal species and he delved into gut health in the context of heat stress. He discussed the effects of heat stress – less meat, less milk, fewer eggs. Pivotal in his pres- entation was the question of whether a heat stress–related decrease in feed intake would be responsible for re- duced performance. advantages, including the minimum amount of labour required, low costs per data set, 24/7 data flow and unified data administration. Another aspect of the Nedap solution programme was explained by Martin Enderink (right), global sales director at Nedap. He zoomed in on the solution PorkSense, which aims to improve effi- ciency in the area of pig production that revolves around large numbers: the finisher barns. He introduced the PorkTuner, a weighing unit with three exits: leading finishers to go to a high-density diet court, a low-density diet court or a zone where they can be picked up for collection. Data gathered using the solution will also be constant- ly available, making management easy.
