Russia is on fire

What is happening in China is happening in Russia as well. On one hand, the country has been gearing up in recent years to achieve a rapid reconstruction and professionalisation of its swine industry. In April, that even led to the claim that Russia had overtaken Brazil in terms of output. And on the other, Russia is still facing the flaring up of African Swine Fever (ASF) in various regions of the country. Across the winter months, over half a million pigs had to be culled in commercial farms in various regions of Russia, according to data shared by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). This picture was taken in Zabaykalsky Krai, in Russia’s Far East. Near the city Chita, pigs were found with symptoms of ASF, after which over 1,000 livestock were sent to incineration in early March 2021.
