Pigs defining the future
n October 2020 the world had 7.8 billion souls, spread out over the 195 countries and other territories. This November, just under 7.5 billion of them turned their eyes to the United States to see how the other 331 million voted in the presidential elections. As the US is the world’s number one military power and as the country has dominated world politics since the end of the Second World War, the preference of 4.2% of the world’s population has an impact on how history will evolve from January 2021.
Those following the US elections a little bit know that voting happens by state, and in virtually all states a sys-
tem of first-past-the-post is applied. The party winning 50% plus one of the votes wins the entire state. In most states, the outcome is known in advance. California, for instance, always votes Democrat, whereas Texas always votes Republican. According to the election analytics website FiveThirtyEight, 12 US states are identified as “swing states”, where it could go either way. Basically in those states, home to 100 million of the 331 million, the decision is
made. So it’s 1.3% of the world population deciding on the future of the planet. Among the swing states are Iowa, Minnesota and North Carolina – the big three when it comes to pig numbers in the US. The choice was yours. Pigs defined the future, at least for the next four years to come.
