Silent witnesses


Quiet, fluffy pigs instead of roaring, passionate fans occupying the stands of a German football club – in any other year this would be quite unthinkable during matches. In times of Covid-19, however, reality can sometimes have its absurd edges. From fear of spreading virus, in most European countries the re- maining games in the football season had to be played against the backdrop of empty stadiums. Well, we say empty, but quite a few clubs searched for a way to fill the void. The club Lokomotive Leipzig decided to sell lucky pigs for € 15 each, the idea being they’d represent the club’s fans and attend both home and away matches in a battle for promotion against SC Verl. Pigs (‘Schweine’ in German) would be an appropriate choice, the club thought, as the German expression ‘Schwein haben’ means ‘to be lucky’. It seems, however, the club didn’t sell enough mascots. Lok Leipzig lost the play-offs …
