ecently, a picture in the local Dutch newspaper Eindhovens Dagblad triggered the anger of the agri- cultural community. To an article about citizens going to court to fight farm odours, the newspaper had added a picture of a landscape with a greenish fog hanging over it. Obviously an art designer’s work – and the caption with the picture confirmed that. On social media, various people from the livestock business reacted that this had been the last straw – they would now cancel their subscriptions. In short the comments came down to this: the newspaper had intention-

Now I am a journalist as well, and over the years I have learned what it takes to make publications – even local newspapers. While I agree that perhaps the picture on that front cover might not have been their finest moment, I mainly wondered what was going on in the creation of that front cover. In an editorial piece, a few days later, the ex-


planation came: the colleagues had associated “green” with a bad smell. And by using green it would immediately be clear that the picture was edited. Sometimes simply asking why things have happened the way they have can help clarify them. Not all journalists are bad. I’m one of them.
