Backlogs
Crowded pens were unfortunately not an uncommon sight in recent months in US pig farms. As Covid-19 hampered the production process, various meatpackers had to close their doors for some time, leading to huge backlogs. With pain in their hearts, some producers saw no other solution than to euthanise their pigs – or abort their sows. In May, pig producer Greg Boerboom from Marshall, MN, shared his experiences with The New York Times, where this picture was prominently featured. In the article he explained he was trying to find ways to avoid killing a backlog of more than 1,000 pigs. He added, “There are farmers who cannot finish their sentences when they talk about what they have to do.”
