THOUGHTS ▶▶▶ In times of Covid-19

Over the last few months, it has seemed like nothing else matters. It has been Covid-19 everywhere you look. In the mainstream media, on social media, on talk shows, in the newspaper, even at home my cat Plato has won- dered to what he owes the pleasure of my permanent company. And while I’m writing this editorial, develop- ments around Covid-19 are still ongoing – with pork slaughter plants being temporarily shut down, or new co- rona cases being discovered. No doubt the true extent of the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on pig production will become clearer in the months to come. At Pig Progress, we have been trying to capture the most

important actual developments in various continents through regular blog posts at www.pigprogress.net. Among all the coverage online, I’d like to recommend the audio interview we had with Gabor Fluit, CEO Asia of De Heus in

Vietnam, in which he explains the positive impact of Covid-19 on pork sales in this country. While the website is ideal for developing stories, our magazine takes time to get printed and distributed. That is why

for the magazine we opted for a deep dive into the background. In this issue, you will find an informative overview of coronaviruses that can directly rather than indirectly affect pigs – side by side with rock solid proof that this variety of the coronavirus cannot affect them. Should you wish to know how to deal better with overstocked pens in times of Covid-19, turn to Dr Monique Pairis-Garcia’s column on page 50.
