THOUGHTS ▶▶▶ I Upside and downside of summer
s there a downside to summer? In my household, here in the Northern Hemisphere, we all agree there is no downside when it comes to the warmer season encroaching upon us. With the promise of hazy summer days in the air, we may find ourselves dreaming of the things that come with this very welcomed season – from trips to the sea to simply enjoying the barefoot days with ice-lollies in hand and sunglasses in reach. So when these days finally arrive, I can truly say that I am “in my element”.
The same can’t be said for livestock; for dairy cows the downside is of course the spiking temperatures to the point where heat stress sets in and issues of welfare, health and animal performance become major concerns. What can be done? How can we make sure that livestock are better equipped to deal with heat stress? From keeping cows cool to better feeding strategies, there are ways to ensure that your herd is as comfortable as possible. It goes without saying that water needs to be easily available to animals to help combat heat stress, while nutrition and feed management strategies can play a major role in this too. Just like other things, there are positives and negatives to many situations. The key with rising tem- peratures and livestock production is to be prepared and have a plan in place. See page 22 to read about nutrition as a tool to adapt to heat stress. Welcome, summer!
