THOUGHTS ▶▶▶ F Parlour decisions

rom the outside, the process of milking cows in a parlour can seem to run like a well-oiled machine. However, getting to the point where the process runs without major hiccups has typically involved many, many decisions beforehand. One parlour expert I recently talked with mentioned the importance of cow comfort, which of course lends itself to an increase in milk production, efficiency, better per-

forming animals and adds to a pleasant working environment. Yet when it comes to comfort, many options are available to meet the needs of the animals and the farmer alike, and various factors influence decision-making. When thinking about a new parlour installation, knowing what you want from your farm’s future is as impor- tant as cow comfort. Will you expand your herd? Labour costs are related to automation, so how much auto- mation will you need? How many employees do you intend to have? How much data and which data are important? These are the kinds of decisions that will need to be made ahead of time or at least be given some real thought. Whether you are considering a herringbone or rotary parlour or some other type, take the time to think about the future and the wide range of possibilities so you can build an efficient and healthy running farm for years to come. Some insights are on page 19.
