The use of for- maldehyde has an effect on both human and animal health.

be considered when looking to replace formaldehyde with organic acids. Efficacy and distribution: Organic acids alone might not com- pete with formaldehyde when it comes to pathogen efficacy or price. This is why it is critical to make sure the blend of or- ganic acids and other ingredients have proven efficacy. Fur- thermore, as efficacy in tackling microbial growth tends to be lower compared to formaldehyde, even distribution and prop- er mixing is of higher importance to ensure the same level of pathogen reduction. Safety and stability: Organic acid blends, mixed with specific ingredients, offer several distinct advantages over formalde- hyde. Safety will always be the top priority alongside lower risks to human and animal health. Trouw Nutrition data shows that its Selko feed additive solution, Fylax Forte-HC liquid can improve feed shelf life and reduce microbial loads. Results show that feed shelf-life was three times higher with Fylax Forte-HC liquid as compared to formaldehyde. This is due to the buffering capacity, which ensures longer efficacy in countering formaldehyde’s volatile nature (Figure 1). Rapid Action: Another solution in the Selko feed additive prod- uct portfolio is Fysal Feed. Depending on the specific need of the feed producer, this product is highly effective in rapidly re- ducing microbes, such as moulds and Salmonella. An in-house study clearly showed a strong reduction in enterobacteriaceae counts, even after 14 days of storage (Figure 2).

Dosing drives success Even distribution of Selko feed additives supports efficacy when replacing formaldehyde. Trouw Nutrition has decades of experience in researching the most effective ways of treating feed raw materials within the feed production chain. Different types of dosing equipment allow for safe, accurate and even

fully automated distribution of organic acid blends. Trouw Nutrition’s proprietary ‘plug & spray’ dosing systems are as- sembled in the Netherlands, to ensure uniformity, stability and quality throughout the portfolio. Units are shipped globally, allowing Trouw Nutrition dedicated dosing engineers to pro- vide the best solution to customers. Depending on the need, dosing equipment can apply Selko liquid products at any step of the feed production chain. Whether spraying solutions on raw feed materials during intake or introducing solutions dur- ing the mixing stage via a fully automated in-line moisture management system with real-time inclusion rate adaptation according to actual moisture measurements, Trouw Nutrition specialists collaborate with feed industry stakeholders to support safe, high-quality and cost-effective feed.
