Data protection is changing

On 25 May 2018, the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force. GDPR is intended as a European legal framework for data protection within the EU. It will legally impact all organisations who hold and process data on Europeans as part of their operation. The government has confirmed

that, due to Brexit, any existing UK regulations will be replaced by the GDPR. Failure to comply with GDPR could result in a significant fine, so it is essential that SCI is compliant.

The new regulation offers members

and customers more choice over how your data is managed. Members also have the right to know what information we hold on them, see the information, edit it, limit its use or request that it not be used at all. We will continue to update you in

the coming months, to make sure that you are aware of the possible impact GDPR may have. Please also look out for further updates on GDPR and how you can select your communications preferences

The second champion is

experience in investment on both sides of the table, with a focus on the technology industry. OBITUARY

Carl Martin (1925-2017) It is with regret that SCI announces the death of

member Carl Martin. Carl was an SCI member for nearly 40 years and brought his enthusiasm and hard work to a number of groups – both technical and regional. He is well-known amongst the Health and Safety

Group for his active role on the committee, having served as honorary secretary, treasurer and later as chair.

During his time as a member of the

group, Carl endeavoured to improve the quality of activities for others, and spent time developing relationships with BOHS and the British Occupational Hygiene Society for collaborative events. His work with the late Geoff Eaggot

to increase interest in the group and SCI, encouraging membership and organising regular meetings and events will not be forgotten and is very much appreciated by all those that had the pleasure of working with him. Carl also served on SCI’s Council – now the Board

of Trustees – until 2004 and sat on the Finance and Investments Advisory committee. For his relentless hard work and dedication to the society, he received a Distinguished Service Award in 2012. Carl will be sorely missed. He was always cheerful and members of the Health and Safety group were lucky to have the honour of working with him. Our condolences go out to his wife and family during this difficult time.

Innovation Capital, he helps to build relationships between the University of Cambridge and intellectual property-rich companies in the Cambridge cluster. Victor was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry Entrepreneur of the Year in 2002.
