UK speciality chemicals and sustainable technologies company, Johnson Matthey has announced the successful scale-up and commercial availability of a Gusev catalyst, Ru-SNS, for ester hydrogenation. Using licensed technology developed by GreenCentre Canada, the catalyst combines high activity with high chemoselectivity that can be used in the manufacture of a variety of commercial products, including pharmaceuticals, detergents, cosmetics, and flavours and fragrances.
Novartis and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have formed an alliance to advance development of Novartis’ drug candidate KDU731 for treating cryptosporidiosis, the second leading cause of infectious diarrhoea in children under two years of age. Under the terms of the agreement, the Foundation will provide $6.5m to the Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD) to support the development.
German biotechnology company, ProBioGen, which specialises in contract development and manufacturing of complex glycoproteins, has signed a non-exclusive licence agreement on its proprietary human artificial lymph node technology with Israeli multinational pharmaceutical company, Teva. The technology can be used as a predictive tool to assist in the assessment of its drug candidates.
Swiss multinational chemicals and biotechnology company, Lonza, headquartered in Basel, will establish centres of excellence for cell and gene therapy at its sites in Pearland, Texas, US, and Geleen/Maastricht in the Netherlands. Lonza’s sites in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, US, and Singapore will serve both as clinical and commercial manufacturing sites. The company’s cell-therapy operations will move out of Walkersville, Maryland, US, which will now focus on the bioscience solutions business.
Green and sustainable technology company, Green Lizard Technologies, a spin-out from Queen’s University
Belfast, has acquired pilot plant, office and laboratory space at the Wilton Centre, Teesside, UK, to test manufacture epoxy propanol (EP), which can be used to synthesise greener, cleaner, industrial chemicals. Green Lizard and its development partners – Malaysian crude palm oil producer, FGV and US-based Dixie Chemical – will invest $25m in a full-scale production plant at Wilton, employing more than 30 people as early as 2021.
Biopharmaceutical company, Theravance Biopharma Ireland, a subsidiary of Theravance Biopharma, headquartered in the Cayman Islands, has entered into a global co-development and commercialisation agreement with Janssen Biotech, a subsidiary of US pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson, for its TD-1473 drug candidate and related compounds for inflammatory intestinal diseases. Theravance will receive an upfront payment of $100m and be eligible for an additional $900m in payments if Janssen remains in the collaboration following the completion of certain Phase 2 activities. The two companies will share profits – 67% to Janssen and 33% to Theravance – in the US and expenses related to a potential Phase 3 programme.
Multinational biopharmaceutical company, UCB, headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, and a syndicate of Belgian and international investors, led by Scandinavia’s Novo Seeds and Ireland’s Fountain Healthcare together with Johnson & Johnson Innovation, and Belgium-based V-Bio Ventures, the Walloon Investment Fund and the Vives Louvain Technolgy Fund, have created biotechnology company, Syndesi Therapeutics, based in Belgium, to develop novel therapeutics for cognitive disorders.
Biopharmaceutical company, Kite Pharma, which specialises in cancer immunotherapy products, is buying an R&D building in Santa Monica, California, for approximately $135m. A subsidiary of Gilead Sciences, headquartered in Foster City, California, Kite Pharma is acquiringing the building from biotechnology company, Agensys, owned by Tokyo’s Astellas Pharma.

repellent protection range. Smartrepel Hydro AM is described as a ‘universal’ formulation for cotton and synthetic fabrics, offering breathability with ‘boosted’ durability of its effect and smoother processability through the use of micro-encapsulated technology.
At SIMA 2018, the footwear technology and machinery trade fair in Milan in February, BASF presented its latest developments involving Elastopan ULD (ultra low density) polyurethane systems for slippers. The material has a density 30% lower, compared with conventional slipper systems, and is softer and more flexible. A new footwear app was also introduced to provide an overview for information about BASF’s range of products, as well as insights into successful customer projects and the latest footwear trends.
In the US, the German Society of Pennsylvania selected Makrolon abrasion resistant polycarbonate sheet supplied by Covestro to protect a piece of the Berlin Wall located at the German Embassy in Washington DC. Designed to protect against the elements, breakage and vandalism, the enclosure should help maintain the graffiti on the East and West sides of the wall section.
