track of where their buses are, but they can also know how much energy they still have on the bus. It can tell you the state of health of its batteries, their efficiency, the speed of regeneration and they can even use the system to plug in intelligently. The system starts charging automatically at off-peak hours when energy is less expen- sive,” Moore said. “That way, you’re saving money on the back end.” Slyman foresees a progression of V2X technology migrating from larger com-
mercial vehicles—“Think school buses, emergency vehicles, construction equip- ment and snowplows”—to new automobiles over time. “There’s always a question

about how much information (to) make available because, at a certain point, if you’re flashing up warning signals frequently, the driver is going to start ignoring them,” Slyman added. “[Manufacturers] will have to be very deliberate about what is going to be com- municated. There’s going to be a deliberate development of use cases and pilot programs so they can figure that out.” He predicted premium auto
manufacturers, including Navistar’s parent company Volkswagen, will begin to incorporate V2X features into their vehicles “sooner than a couple of years.” “For the majority of vehicles,
it’s probably going to be closer to the end of the decade when you start seeing them on medi- um-value vehicles,” Slyman said. Moore commented that
the Internet of Things era is prompting vehicles to become increasingly connected to the cloud of information. “As we shift to the electrifi-

cation of the entire automotive industry, we’re going to see more and more connect- ed vehicles and increasing functionalities tied to cost-and energy efficiency as well as safety,” he concluded. “The technology and adoption are in their very, very early stag- es so, right now, it’s all about proof of concept and showing how it can work It’s a new frontier, and it’s something very exciting.” ●
