An online article published in March reported on a Maryland bill that could offer more flexibility to student transporters by authorizing transportation to and from school for select students, using a vehicle other than a school bus. Read the article at stnonline.com/go/8k.

School buses are the safest form of transportation, designed to protect our most valuable passengers, the children that ride them. I suggest the state implements a system to pay contractors and school districts a higher wage for using [multi-purpose vehicle] units versus vans. It would encourage the districts to make safer decisions, not less expensive decisions. Facebook/James Mansel

This has been allowed in New Jersey for as long as I have been in the industry (20 years) and well beyond that. Some of these routes may travel 60-plus miles each way. To operate a yellow van/bus on these types of routes would significantly increase costs. However, these small vehicles are still considered school vehicles [and] are inspected twice a year by the state school bus inspection teams and require a CDL to drive. Facebook/Edals Ellis

In a joint effort between the U.S. Department of Education and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, President Joe Biden encouraged all school districts to vaccinate school staff to enable a safer re-openings of schools.Read more at stnonline.com/go/8l.

Our district received our last vaccines on Feb. 12. For the first time this school year, I was able to go into our K-2 building and help with the March Reading Book Fair. Facebook/Estelle Graves

A 21-year-old college student discussed her experience working as a part-time school bus driver for a district in White County, Arkansas. Read the article at stnonline.com/go/8m.

Did it while attending college from 18 to 22 as well. Perfect for college students! In general, it’s a great job for younger people. They can relate better to students in some aspects and can be terrific role models. Facebook/Ryan Philip

Episode 53 of the School Transportation Nation podcast discussed the impact of COVID-19 related safety procedures on school bus fleet operations as well as advancements towards school bus electrification, and the minimum wage. Listen at stnpodcast.com.

You can’t keep drivers now as it is, and now you want to tell us we’re still at minimum wage? I’ve been driving for the transportation system for the past 20 years and having to be the lowest paid employees [that are] so dedicated to their job but [we are told], “Remember, it’s for the kids.” We get a 1.3 percent raise a year, while the school board gives themselves a 33 percent raise.
