often, Couglin stressed that the danger zone remains the most dangerous area in student transportation. “This is where most of our fatalities and injuries come from, so we need to monitor this danger zone better and we’ve got the technology now to monitor it better than ever,” he continued. Increasingly, school districts are turning to radar sen-


sors on the bus to detect students. The technology has come a long way since the early days. Coughlin tested early student detection systems in 1985 and recalled many false readings that provided little confidence for school bus drivers. “If it was raining outside and water was drip-


ping off the bumper, that would give off a false signal that there was a student in the loading zone,” he shared. However, today’s sensors provide much more accurate


readings. Thomas Built Buses is rolling out several similar features on its latest Saf-T-Liner C2 that aim to remove obstacles. In partnership with MITO Corporation and CUB Group, Thomas Buses debuted a prototype of a new pe- destrian detection technology in 2018. Leslie Kilgore, vice president of engineering for the OEM, said the company hopes to go into production later this year. “The radar features on the pedestrian detection system are located in the danger zone of the bus,” Kilgore continued. “Sensors are not located on the doors, but instead are around the skirt and bumpers of the bus to create awareness for the driver all the way around the school bus. This allows for detection of children relative to the length of the bus.” Video technology is playing a role in revealing these blind spots for drivers and supplementing compliant
