B
efore Vincent Adamo knew what was happening, flames rose up from the school bus engine, leaving him two minutes to clear out 14 special needs students—including a wheelchair rider.
This wasn’t a drill for Charlotte County Public Schools in cen-
tral Florida last August, but now it is a district training video. “It was literally two minutes and they had everybody off the bus, but it feels like you’re watching it for half an hour. The video is crystal clear, and the sound, you can hear the fire crackling and the glass breaking and all that stuff. It was horrific to watch, but I was very happy to see that there was nobody left on the bus,” said Tony Conte, the district’s trans- portation director. “The video proves that they did their job.”
