well as special ed routes to cover the abundance of new neighborhoods that are under development,” Ramm said. “We have also had to add additional stops in our neigh- borhood communities that are already established.” Students register to ride the bus during open enroll-
ment, when Ramm said parents also sign their child up for Smart Tag RFID technology to scan on and off the bus. “All students that are eligible to ride the bus are rout-
ed through our Transfinder software,” she added. “This process allows us to get more accurate data regarding ridership as well as enables our routers to manage their time more effectively by not having to create unneces- sary routes.” The routing process starts early. Ramm explained
that as soon as the current school year starts, staff start forecasting their needs for the next school year. “Transportation evaluates yearly our new community
developments as well as ridership increase,” she said. “We use the new home growth and ridership forecast for our fleet, routes and personal needs for the new school year.” Several years ago, the district transitioned from a single tier to a double tier system to address a driver shortage. pendent School District has seen nearly 15 percent growth. The district currently has 30,602 students in the district and 7,200 are transported via the school bus. New routes must be added throughout the year. “To accommodate this growth, we have expanded our services to new areas and have had to be creative with the number of bus stops for students,” said Teri Mapengo, the director of transportation. “This has been a challenging process, as we had to evolve from having multiple stops when the district was smaller, to creating hub stops to make our routes more effective.
