“I firmly believe that the more visible we make our school buses, the safer

we keep our MOST PRECIOUS cargo: OUR kids!”

EGAL

These findings highlight the critical need for enhanced measures to prevent illegal passing and protect students across the nation.

The root causes of these violations include distracted driving, limited visibility during low-light conditions, and a lack of awareness about the rules regarding stopped school buses.

Innovating Safety Through Technology and Awareness

First Light Safety Products lead the charge in revolutionizing school bus safety through advanced lighting systems. Designed to maximize visibility in all conditions, these technologies alert drivers to the presence of stopped school buses well in advance, with transportation directors reporting positive results. In North Carolina, Matt Tedder, Transportation Director for Stokes County Schools, shared how the district’s adoption of illuminated activity bus signage has enhanced safety and visibility: “We have received numerous compliments from other districts and are very pleased with the First Light illuminated Activity Bus signage. We love the illuminated signs and stop-arms on our yellow buses, but we also plan

to continue outfitting these activity bus lights on all our new purchases.” Tedder noted. He emphasized that the illuminated signage not only increases visibility but also improves recognition by other drivers, making roads safer for students and staff alike. The district’s commitment to safety is clear, as they plan to outfit all new activity buses with this advanced lighting. “First Light’s products and service have been great, and we hope to continue our relationship for years to come.” Tedder concluded.

Meanwhile, in rural Arkansas, the Pocahontas Area Community School District witnessed a dramatic change after implementing First Light’s illuminated school bus signs. Jeff Halder, the district’s Transportation Director, described the transformative effect on a bus route notorious for stop-arm violations. “Last year, the bus on this route had the most stop-arm violations. This year, with the illuminated sign, the same bus on the same route has not had anyone run the stop arm. Being a very rural school district, the illuminated school bus sign is the first thing you see coming down the road, and it is visible from over a mile away. We are discussing installing more of these on our other route buses.” Halder reported.
