the highest clean air delivery rate,” he added, claiming that the company’s filter system lasts three to four times longer than a standard bus filter. “We can include five, 10 or even 12 years of media replacement with the purchase of a system. On our systems that use UV bulbs, we now include a non-transferrable life of the bus warranty on the bulbs.” Valeo Thermal Bus Sales claimed its UV-C Air Purifica-
tion System disinfects the air inside the bus, killing more than 95.9 percent of bacteria. “The system is designed to operate independent of the air conditioning system, and therefore can be used in all buses,” a company spokes- person stated. “As long as the bus is operating, the UV-C Air Purifier is doing its job, purifying the air and protect- ing our children.”
Additional Safety Measure The transportation department serving Crystal Lake Elementary School District 47 and Community High School District 155 in Illinois ordered 121 Webasto Air Fil- tration Systems last month as an additional layer of safety. Transportation Director Penny Fleming explained that the HEPA filters are an added mitigation measure to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19 on school buses. She noted that the Illinois Department of Public Health
recommends opening school bus windows and the roof hatch amid COVID-19 to ensure air flow. However, Fleming noted that during inclement weather, having the filters enhances the air quality without having to open the windows. Daytime temperatures there late last month ranged between 7 degrees and 35 degrees, but the wind chill was as low as negative 8. She noted that the transportation department is co-
owned by both districts, and they split the cost of the filters to be retrofitted on all buses. They did not use any federal funds for the purchase. The filters will be installed by bus dealer Midwest Transit Equipment so that transportation mechanics can continue to focus on their normal work- load, Fleming added. “We look forward to being able to provide this filtration system as an added mitigation layer on our buses, and that it should increase the health and safety for both drivers and students,” she said. ●
