Cassandra Marryatt – Mechanic II Klein Independent School District, Texas

For the past two years, Cassandra

Marryatt has been breaking barri- ers, challenging stereotypes and contributing to greater diversity and inclusivity. She describes what it means to be a female in a predom- inantly male dominated field: “It’s about proving gender doesn’t matter in regard to capability while inspiring

others to pursue their passions regardless of societal norms,” she continued. Joe Terpstra, assistant director of fleet services, said he has seen

young professionals come and go during his 37-year career as a mechanic. However, he said Marryatt “is uniquely gifted and driven.” He added that she has displayed talent from day one, immediately impressing the team with her diagnostics and technical skills. Marryatt said she was introduced to the idea of fleet work when

she discovered that one of her automotive teachers in college also worked as a teacher for Klein ISD. She said she had never consid- ered fleet work but was encouraged apply. “I’m glad I did because I

love working here,” she said, adding that her day involves inspect- ing buses or any problems and carrying out repairs as needed. She started her employment as a lube tech, but Terpstra said she could quickly diagnose other mechanical issues at a glance. “Since then, her understanding of mechanics and the tools of

the trade has grown significantly along with ASE certifications and a promotion to a level-two technician,” he added. “She has become one of Klein’s top performing bus technicians. Along with her can-do attitude and team-building skills, Cassandra is an absolute pleasure to work with on a daily basis, which is valued not only by myself but by her peers who often rely on her to step in and assist them in getting the job done.” Marryatt said her job duties include helping drivers with bus

issues and responding to road calls to replace buses for drivers and students. “The best part of my job is the excitement and challenge of never knowing exactly what each day will bring,” she said. “I enjoy tackling new and unexpected issues and while finding creative solutions on the fly to continue keeping the buses on the road and kids moving safely.” One of her goals is to be a positive influence on women of all ages.
