he Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8 in Colorado uses Fleet Vision, Navistar, Snap-On, and Cummins diagnostic software to empower technicians with the necessary tools to diagnose vehicle deficiencies. The district also uses telematic tools such as Geotab for
live evaluations and diagnoses of problems while vehicles are on the road. To do so these days is a necessity, noted Robert Leach, director of transportation. Indeed, an STN survey found supply chain disruptions
continue to be a challenge for school transportation departments. While 12 percent indicate no challenge, some 30 percent said they have encountered longer lead times to obtain parts deliveries. Nine percent said they have substituted brands based on availability. One department said it is keeping more parts inventory on site. Plus, depending on the number of buses in their fleet, districts spend thousands of dollars annually on tires, brakes, fluid, electrical systems, fuel, parts, and labor. “By using state of the art diagnostic tools, we can return
vehicles to service quicker,” Leach said. “Faster turnaround times and preventative and corrective maintenance translates into labor and parts savings.” As many technologies are eventually incorporated into school bus maintenance operations, they have the potential to provide a return on investment in many beneficial ways, such as through training, record keeping, streamlining inspection procedures, and remote collaboration, noted William Tuttle, a senior simulation advisor at Cummins.
