Grossmont Union High School District, California
Fleet Maintained: 68 school buses, 210 other pieces of equipment & 15 buses from other locations Total Shop Staff: 1 body mechanic, 1 service mechanic, 6 heavy-duty mechanics
Most challenging maintenance problem to date? “My
first job [at GUHSD] where I had to replace an engine knowing that if I messed up that it would probably be my last job. I did the job, and it ran perfectly.”
Army and Marine Corps veteran Robert Wolfe is de- scribed as a pillar in his community. He began working for Grossmont Union High School District near San Diego over nine years ago as a heavy-duty mechanic. Six months ago, Wolfe was promoted to heavy duty lead mechanic. Prior to working at GUHSD he worked in motorcoach operations. “Rob has helped me implement significant positive
changes to the shop regarding scheduling and efficiency of workflow and production from the shop staff,” said John Stevenson, the fleet maintenance supervisor for the dis- trict, when nominating Wolfe. “He has gained the respect and trust of his fellow employees and management alike. As a result of his leadership, GUHSD passed the most re- cent [California Highway Patrol] terminal rating inspection. Additionally, he successfully executed the entire transition- al move from our 80-year-old bus maintenance facility to a new, 85,000-square foot, state-of-the-art facility.” Stevenson added that Wolfe was selected as the school
district’s 2021-2022 Transportation Employee of the Year. Currently, Grossmont mechanics are working on
catching up on all of the small repairs that they weren’t able to complete during the school year. They are also preparing for the new electric school buses that will be arriving prior to the start of the school year. Wolf noted that his favorite part of his job is coming
in everyday to do the best that he can do, knowing that kids riding district buses are going to be safe. When he’s not in the shop, he said he likes to spend his free time in nature, visiting national parks as well as museums. ●
