Andrew Scharder has been a mechanic all of his life, Brooks McQuinn, the transportation supervisor for Malone Central School District in New York wrote on his nomination form. He added that Scharder has “a unique ability to not only fix our buses, but many districts call on him when they have a problem they can’t fix.” McQuinn added that Scharder has a “huge heart” for everyone, being one of the first to volunteer when someone is in need. One example McQuinn provided was Scharder plowing driveways covered in snow. “He never wants recognition for what he does but also never wants to see someone go without,” McQuinn said, noting that Scharder has worked at the school district for seven years. When up for a promotion, Scharder wanted the job to go to a coworker he felt needed it more. “He has always fought for others in what he believes will better them as a person and employee,” McQuinn said. When he’s not working, Scharder volunteers as a hunting instructor, as he said he wants youth to have interests in things other than video games.
