allow us to attract, retain and maintain dedicated and professional team members. We have also increased the public understanding of the

importance and value of each of our bus drivers. They are a part of the educational process, and we must continue to show them that they are valuable and indispensable.

STN: Why is it important to have a working relation-

ship with the transportation department? Price: It is extremely important to have a working rela-

tionship with the transportation department since bus drivers and monitors are often the first and last people our students see every day before returning home. With that, our team members monitor our students and have a great deal of valuable input that can be shared at the school level to monitor the well-being of our students. Our transportation department is also taking on many additional roles such as transporting meals during the school day and summer. They are also ready to serve the community with transportation in the event of a major emergency.

STN: Are there any projects that transportation is cur-

rently working on implementing? Price: Our transportation department is currently

working on additional staff development opportunities to enhance driver and monitor training, and upgrading our fleet with enhanced video and communications equipment. The current and future EPA regulations and fuel costs will require our transportation department to look at alternative fuel vehicles in the near future. Infrastructure development in rural Georgia is one of the factors that inhibit us from moving more progressively towards different alternatives. Once the infrastructure becomes more developed, more grants become avail- able to offset the cost of alternative fuel vehicles, and available training opportunities increase to work on these new types of vehicles, our interest to migrate to a greener fleet does exist. ●

Over the past six years, Baldwin County School District has seen graduation rates increase from 66 percent to 85 percent.
