Having a younger fleet also allows the district to invest in new tech-
nology, from backup cameras to upgraded air conditioning systems to additional safety technology, like LED lights and stop-arm cameras. Additionally, the new school buses—at the time of STN’s visit, HCPS was preparing for the delivery of 160 school buses, with bus No. 33 having just arrived—come with First Light Safety products such as illuminated stop arms and school bus sign, on-board tablets, GPS, lane-departure alerts, speed-limit notifications and tire-pressure monitoring. All school buses are equipped with lap seatbelts and strobe lights to improve visibility, per Florida law. Hill said the illuminated products are a huge benefit, especially since el-

ementary students are boarding buses early in the morning. The additional lighting provides an extra layer of safety for its youngest riders. The district also recently purchased student ridership cards from CI Solutions with plans to roll them out this year as well as a parent app through Synovia’s Here Comes the Bus. The district has also deployed electric school buses from Blue Bird, IC Bus and Thomas Built Buses via grants. Its approximately 40 electric buses
