Gloria Lee’s style appears virtually effortless, as her brush strokes dance and intertwine over the canvas, mimicing a choreographer on stage, photosynthesizing a flowery demeanor inspired by Lee’s background in jazz dance.
Lee approaches the easel with a basic idea in mind, allowing the hand and im- agination to coincide in an improvised manner. “I pick colors that are beautiful together and experiment with splatter- ing, dragging and drizzling, creating a unpredictable rhythm and flow.” Gloria shares, “It’s about getting the mood and feeling right on a piece.” She creates the background first, then uses a palette knife to add the final touches to our flowery friends.
The paintings own this organized chaos similar to the avant garde associated with jazz. Everything is all over the place, but in an elegant and coordinated way. Some of her work evokes a certain warmth of melancholy, angst and reassurance, while others display a cool and refreshing feeling that elicits a certain sense of freedom. It’s Lee’s in-the-moment style that establishes a variety of emotions.

Even with over 20 years of professional experience, Lee understands that an artist not only needs to be creative, but resourceful and persistent; “I’m not rich, but I’m doing what I love.” Gloria interjects about creation, “You have to keep the momentum going and evolve and it all pays off.” Keeping up with nine different galleries spanning from San
Diego to South Carolina, Gloria has to be prolific when creating her floral abstraction. Although, when she isn’t fertilizing
the
canvas, she remains in a creative state of mind whether it be cooking, interior design or reupholstering furniture, creative juices like a true artist.
