Michael Flohr Winter
G between Wonderland
azing at Michael Flohr’s work, it may surprise some view- ers that he grew up in Lakeside, California, where fine arts takes a backseat to agriculture and the Bulls Only Rodeo. His art is a blend of vibrant and dark colors that establish a dream-like sequence. Cityscapes, cafés and
bars that elect a mood of nos- talgia; a romantic memory of the times you’ve escaped life’s daily-grind and discovered the world. Flohr is now adding to that
feeling with the addition
of a flurry of white season- ing. Currently, on Flohr’s most chilling endeavor, he plans on incorporating more seasonal cityscapes into his repertoire. New York, Chicago, Den-
ver, and Prague are vastly dif- ferent
seasons, as
winter gently drapes a blanket of snow over these citys’ archi- tecture and streets. Flohr looks to mimic this scenery in his new collection entitled Winter Won- derland. “I want the pieces to have the cold, snowy-feel, but with
the warmth of the res-
taurant and glow from store fronts spilling out onto the cool streets.” Flohr explains his vi- sion, “A contrast of warm and inviting light with cold and icy colors outside.” This is no easy task, as Flohr talks about get- ting the reflection of lights onto the snow, “When you have snow, all the colors reflect. It’s a chance to add color into the snow; you get a lot of reflective opportunities.” Flohr never craved the high-
paying desk job growing up. “Painting was a do or die situa- tion”, he confessed on the way to his downtown studio, “I was never really good at anything else, I had to do it, I had to make it work.” This has Flohr in a constant state of creative diligence, “I paint almost everyday. I love it; it’s an obsession, through and through, it is who I am.”
