FROM THE EDITOR ETFO Executive Members

PRESIDENT Sam Hammond, Hamilton-Wentworth

FIRST VICE-PRESIDENT Susan Swackhammer, Grand Erie VICE-PRESIDENTS

The summer issue of Voice is our women’s issue, an opportunity to focus on women members, women’s programs and women leaders in ETFO and in the broader community. This issue, we have a special feature on the history of women teacher organizing,

from the early struggles

against discrimination to the fi ght for pay equity and equal opportunity. Pay equity is also the subject of this issue’s president’s column, where President Sam Hammond writes, “Given the current 30 percent pay gap, a woman has to work 3 1/2 months into the new year (until

April 16) to earn what a man does by December 31 of the previous year. ” Also in this issue, Gitksan activist for child welfare, professor and Executive

Director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society, Cindy Blackstock, refl ects on the fi ght to ensure that First Nations children and families have access to equitable services when compared to the rest of children living in Canada. “Canada cannot meaningfully engage in reconciliation until it stops discriminating against First Nations children,” she states in her discussion with Voice. In an effort to better understand the situation here in Ontario, Vivian McCaffrey

examines how austerity is impacting education workers across the country. “Given that education unions have memberships that are predominantly female, austerity in the education sector is clearly a women’s issue,” she writes. In our classroom features, Mandi Hardy writes about teaching her students about privilege and refl ects on an exercise she calls “Best Person in the World,” and Catherine Inglis considers how we teach students who are arriving in classrooms across Ontario from war-affected areas and traumatic situations. These articles, along with our book reviews, are sure to make great summer reading! Have a restful and productive summer.
