30.3 The law of conservation of energy
The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change from one form to another. According to this law the same quantity of energy present at the time of the Big Bang still
exists in some form in the universe today. Every time you throw a ball or eat an apple you are using energy which existed over 13 billion years ago. The total amount of energy in the universe has neither increased nor decreased since that time.
Activity
Make a twirling mobile: This simple model demonstrates the change of heat energy into motion energy.
1. Cut a spiral out of a circle of tin foil as shown in Fig. 2. 2. Make a small hole at the top and thread a piece of string through it. 3. Suspend the spiral piece of tin foil from a retort stand as shown in Fig. 3. Place a candle under, but not touching it, or place it over a radiator. 4. Watch what happens.
