CHANGI AIRPORT: TAKING YOUR PHARMA BUSINESS FURTHER

A Vibrant Biopharma Hub in the Heart of Asia Singapore is the top pharmaceutical importer and exporter in Southeast Asia, registering about USD 30 billion worth of air trades in 2024*. Global industry leaders have since established manufacturing hubs in Singapore, producing a wide range of products including Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, drug products, and biologics drug substances. With the global pharmaceutical industry shifting towards advanced technology such as mRNA vaccines and precision therapy, Singapore has made significant strides in advancing such manufacturing capabilities. To cater to the increasing clinical demand for such products, the Advanced Cell Therapy and Research Institute Singapore launched a new 2,000 square meter manufacturing facility in 2023, enabling ramped up production capabilities of these products.

Our Key to Air Cargo Excellence

Changi Airport’s strengths as a leading air cargo hub lie in our network and connectivity, as well as vibrant ecosystem of airlines, express integrators, logistics service providers, freight forwarders, truckers, and ground handlers. These players work hand-in-hand to uphold the highest standards of quality, efficiency, and reliability in air pharmaceutical transportation. Embracing environmental sustainability, Changi’s formula approach to effective and reliable handling and transportation of pharmaceuticals consists of three elements - cold chain network and infrastructure, people and processes, and an approach underpinned by community collaboration

Cold Chain Network and Infrastructure

Changi offers a temperature-controlled environment throughout the airport cold chain with airside temperature protection equipment including cool

dollies, thermal blankets and more than 9,000m2 of temperature-controlled facilities with capacity to handle upwards of 375,000 tons per annum. Beyond these cold rooms, the Airport Free Trade Zone houses close to 30,000m2 of temperature-controlled facilities operated by our logistics partners, facilitating efficient and seamless regional distributions.

Via their THRUCOOL services, our hub carrier Singapore Airlines provides dedicated cold room facilities, quick ramp transfer, thermal blankets and cool dollies, priority uplift and high-level visibility throughout its network to ensure highest level of handling and care for every shipment.

People and Processes

Changi’s logistics service providers have dedicated teams of cold chain specialists who are qualified and experienced in handling different temperature-controlled shipments. Changi is also home to the largest concentration of IATA CEIV Pharma certified companies in Asia Pacific, with certified players in each node along the value chain.

Community Collaboration and Partnerships The Changi air cargo hub recognizes that collaboration at both the global and local level plays a critical role in providing quality assurance in pharmaceutical air transportation.

Locally, Changi plays a leading role in the Pharma@Changi Initiative among our CEIV Pharma certified community to pursue best practices in air pharma transportation and assessing emerging trends and technologies. Changi Airport Group (CAG) is also a member of the Singapore Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (SAPI), whose key members consist of major global biopharma manufacturing companies. Through our membership at SAPI, we remain close and responsive to the industry’s latest innovations and the ever- changing handling and transportation requirements.

Globally, as a founding and strategic member of Pharma.Aero, CAG plays an active role in developing and driving projects that advance air pharma transportation. Together with our partners, Changi hopes to continuously build thought leadership and contribute towards enhancing sustainability in air pharma logistics.

Environmental Sustainability

Changi also takes a broad-based and community approach in building a more sustainable air cargo hub. The key focus areas in CAG’s air cargo environmental sustainability strategy include 1) reducing energy consumption;

2) transitioning our airside vehicles to cleaner energy, 3) enhancing waste management;

4) collaborating with our industry partners to build a more sustainable Changi.
