FRANKFURT AIRPORT – EUROPE’S LEADING CARGO HUB IN A CHANGING GLOBAL LANDSCAPE


Frankfurt Airport (FRA) remains Europe’s leading air cargo hub and a key pillar of international supply chains. In an environment increasingly shaped by geopolitical shifts, fluctuating markets, and evolving customer expectations, FRA continues to demonstrate reliability, resilience, and global connectivity. In 2025, the airport linked 102 countries and 325 destinations through 113 airlines, offering unparalleled access to worldwide markets. Approximately 40% of Germany’s total air cargo volume is handled at Frankfurt, supported by more than 250 logistics companies located on site.


Frankfurt’s central position in Europe enables fast, efficient distribution across the continent and beyond. The Rhine-Main region is home to major players in the electronics, automotive, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries, further underscoring the airport’s strategic importance as an economic hub for Germany and Europe.


Specialized cargo segments continue to gain importance. Frankfurt is Europe’s leading pharmaceutical hub, with more than 22,000 square meters of temperature controlled handling facilities designed for sensitive, high value, and time critical goods. High tech products and e commerce shipments are also driving significant changes in global air cargo flows and operational requirements.


Digitalization and automation are central to this transformation. Nearly 90% of companies within Frankfurt’s cargo community consider digital processes essential for future competitiveness. Increasingly, the differentiating factor for cargo hubs is not the volume they handle but their ability to adapt quickly to changing goods structures and to absorb regulatory, operational, or geopolitical disruptions.


To maintain its leading position and respond to global changes, FRA launched the Masterplan CargoHub. The Masterplan CargoHub is a strategic guideline for the further development of Frankfurt as an air cargo hub. The aim is to modernize and optimize processes, spaces, and infrastructure so that Frankfurt Airport remains the leading European air cargo hub in the future. This includes, for example, expanding storage capacities, improving traffic flows, digitizing logistics processes, and sustainably developing the cargo infrastructure.


A key component is the cargo community system FAIR@Link, operated through the joint venture between Fraport and DAKOSY: allivate. FAIR@Link provides standardized, transparent data exchange across all stakeholders in the cargo chain and forms the backbone of integrated, scalable logistics processes. This is especially relevant in the rapidly growing cross border e commerce sector, where Frankfurt handles around eight million shipments per month, primarily originating from Asia. New digital applications such as Smart Pick Up streamline and automate the collection process by providing real time customs information, digital slot booking, and paperless handling.


CargoCity South, the logistics hub located at FRA has become a major gateway for e commerce imports. Together with German Customs, Fraport has introduced a structured onboarding process to support companies establishing new e commerce operations at FRA, ensuring compliance and operational stability from the outset.


An important infrastructure project under the Masterplan is the LogisticsHub West, located on the former Ticona site. This new, sustainable, and digitally enabled logistics area will offer warehouse space of up to 150,000 square meters, built on a total area of 250,000 square meters and 70,000 square meters of operational area. Integrated customs, security, and IT systems ensure seamless alignment with Frankfurt Airport’s processes and multimodal capabilities.


Cooperation with both regional cargo partners and international airports further strengthens FRA’s resilience and competitiveness. Bilateral partnerships—such as the collaboration with Shanghai Pudong International Airport—focus on harmonizing processes, sharing expertise, and promoting key trade lanes.


Frankfurt Airport is creating the future of air cargo by combining digital innovation, sustainable infrastructure, and strong partnerships—ensuring it remains Europe’s leading hub for global logistics in an ever-changing world.
