AIR CARG O WEEK

WEEKLY NEWS

GHANA TO RELAUNCH NATIONAL AIRLINE

BY Anastasiya SIMSEK AIR CARG O WEEK

AFTER more than a decade without a national carrier, Ghana is preparing to re-enter the skies with a renewed state-backed airline, expected to begin operations within the next 12 months. The country’s Ministry of Transport confirmed that preparations

are at an advanced stage, with regulatory groundwork, fleet planning, and route development actively underway. If successful, the move will restore Ghana’s national aviation presence for the first time since the collapse of Ghana International Airlines in 2010. Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe said the government

was “on track” with the necessary processes to ensure the new airline launches in 2026. “Work is ongoing on regulatory approvals, staf fing, and engagement with potential strategic and technical partners,” he told local media. Ghana’s national airline ambitions have long been shaped by fits and starts. The once-flagship Ghana Airways ceased operations in the mid-2000s following financial instability and mounting debt. Its successor, Ghana International Airlines, was launched with high hopes but ultimately folded in 2010 after enduring similar financial challenges and operational inconsistencies. Since then, multiple attempts to revive a national airline

have failed to materialise. In May 2025, the government set up a 10-member

business model and roadmap—an initiative that appears to be gaining traction. “The state will play a more limited role,” said Nikpe, noting that

this approach is informed by hard lessons from the past. Of ficials believe that a leaner, market-driven model will help prevent the financial burdens that weighed down earlier ef forts. Industry observers have pointed out that a successful airline

could significantly improve intra-African connectivity, a priority long championed by the African Union and various aviation stakeholders.

Ghana’s geographic position of fers a natural

advantage for building hub connections between West Africa, Europe, and the wider continent. In parallel with the airline launch, the government is also moving

forward with infrastructure enhancements at Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Accra. These upgrades are designed to improve passenger movement and prepare the airport to serve as a more competitive regional hub.

Cargo opportunity on the horizon? While the

primary focus of the announcement has been on

passenger services, air cargo remains a critical component of Ghana’s aviation ecosystem. Kotoka International Airport already serves as a key entry point for West African imports and exports, especially perishables, pharmaceuticals, and e-commerce goods. The potential for the new national carrier to support cargo operations - whether via bellyhold capacity or dedicated freighters - could of fer a valuable opportunity to strengthen Ghana’s logistics footprint in the region. No formal cargo strategy has yet been announced, but industry stakeholders
