From Our Founder

Remembering September 1989

Well here we are celebrat-

ing the end of Summer once again. I hope everyone had a good show season this year. Now the fall fairs to wrap up the points.

The September issue of

The Rider was a full blown Al- berta edition with lots of adver- tising and informative stories of the Quarter Horse industry there.

The Alberta Breeders

Group were celebrating 10 years of marketing the Quarter Horses.

October 04 was the start of

the Canadian National Celebra- tion Quarter Horse Power in Canada. The show was the fifth event of it’s kind in Alberta.

Sputolysin by Boehringer

Ingleheim were advertising their coughing and nasal discharge treatment.

Robintide Farms of King

City held a dispersal sale. Craig Alexander, owner, advertised the event in The Rider.

A three year old American

Quarter Horse gelding became part of a new idea. Lincoln Park Zoo in downtown Chicago. “I Choose to Impress “ became part of the renovated Farm-in- the-Zoo.

Dash for Cash, a Racing

Quarter Horse three time racing World Champion, became the sixth horse to have offspring earn more that $25 million.

A Letter to the Editor from

Norman Courage of Vittoria, Ontario took exception to an ar- ticle we had in The Rider. It seems that he was objecting to the Skydome Stampede as an in- sult to the Calgary Stampede. He even used the title of a book we published by Leroy (Cow- boy) Kufski as an example - “That All Cowboys Weren’t Born in The West.

Cowboys for Christ was

invited to the All American Quarter Horse Congress for the 16th Consecutive show.

The Four Bank of Mon-

treal Nations Cup, the rivalry for team show jumping, was sched- uled for Spruce Meadows, Washington DC, and the Na- tional Horse Show in New York State, with the final held at the Royal in Toronto.

Agriculture Canada ad-

vised The Rider that farm in- come was down by 24% in 1989 the income was $3.7 billion.

The Canadian Snaffle Bit

Association were promoting their Maritime Division with an All Breed Futurity Extravaganza on October 7/8 in Fredericton NB.

Quarter Horses returned to

the Kentucky Fair and Exhibi- tion Center “NAILE” ran from November 4-17. The N.S.B.A. added classes to the show.

Dan Patch Tack had a

Giant Tack Sale at RR1 Dun- das,ON. The sale was held on September 21 to 23 there were big discounts on most items.

Co- Chair Joe Carter of

Quarterama ‘90 announced two full point Quarter Horse Shows. Sue Nye was the show secretary.

East Hamilton Lions pre-

sented the “89 ORA Rodeo Fi- nals at Copps Coliseum on October 14 and 15th. Tickets to the event were $10.00. The Heritage Classic Cir-

cuit were still pursuing getting Western Bred Horses to the Olympics. Their slogan was, ‘World Olympics by 1996’ . We are still waiting while the Olympics are seriously consid- ering “Patty Cakes” to be a world event.

My Turn: Here we are at ”Summers

End” and horse shows are still being held. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and not be so hot. I did notice that crops were

really good this year. Peaches, plumbs, pears, apples, hay and almost all cash crops were in abundance. Bob Sisson, a WHAO

judge has pulled up stakes here in southern Ontario and has gone back home to New Brunswick. He is starting a horse operation there so the grapevine says. Good luck in your new adventure. The Rider held our 53rd

Anniversary in the last issue. No one noticed that I jumped a complete year from July 1989 to July 1990 to bring forward some Rider history. So I am back on track with this issue. I don’t have many grippes

to moan about this time round but am really saddened by the fighting, famine, floods, fires in our world. It is all we have, we must keep it safe. Just remember you and

you alone are responsible for what goes on in your neighbour- hood.. Please report abuses to Elders, spouses, children and es- pecially those that can’t speak the neglected and abused ani- mals. Also watch out for those that want to destroy our environ- ment.

Thanks for looking down in the corner. Aidan W. Finn CD Founder of The Rider 1970

law Beth Perkin (Todd), and brothers-in-law Gerry and Jim White. Fondly remembered by his

nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews Bill was first and foremost a farmer, having grown up on a farm in rural Oshawa. As a cattleman he was a fre-

quent fixture at the old Lindsay Sale Barn as well as Woodville

Obituary Harper Mackenzie 1972-2023 The Canadian dressage

community is mourning the loss of one of its own, following the passing of Harper Mackenzie on August 22 after a lengthy illness. Harper was a successful

FEI competitor and gifted horse trainer, but his true passion was teaching. Drawing on the in- depth knowledge of classical principles he gained while train- ing with the likes of Robert Dover, Cindy and Neil Ishoy, and Norbert Vonlak, Harper had a rare talent for helping his students un- derstand the most technical as- pects of dressage. He coached his wife Esther Mortimer to numer- ous Pan American Games and Nations Cup appearances, and to- gether the pair founded M2 Dres- sage in Millgrove, Ontario. Always ready with a smile

and a laugh, and always the first Opinions expressed in this

to lend a hand to someone who needed it, Harper was so many things to so many people: Hus- band, father, son, partner, coach, mentor, friend. However, the role he was most proud of was de- voted hockey dad.

Our thoughts are with

everyone at M2 Dressage and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends, espe- cially wife Esther and son Lucas.

August 1, 1946 – August 20, 2023 His death has left a huge

and Cookstown Sale Barns. He also had a deep love of

horses which brought him to his next love, his wife of 41 years, Leslie. Bill was known for his

sense of humour and his gruff ex- terior, but anyone who really knew him found out what all the animals and small children knew instinctively, that he was a gentle kind-hearted soul. Bill was a valued Gen Auto

Shippers employee for 47 years, many of those as union steward while simultaneously holding down a second job at Toronto Stockyards. Given Bill’s strong work ethic he also held many other jobs over the years, life- guard, sale barn ringman, auc- tioneer, bouncer, farm hand just to mention a few. Bill was also a dedicated

volunteer with many organiza- tions over the years, and could be found helping at his United Churches, Local food bank, Quarter Horse Clubs and Snow- mobile groups. Bill made a dif- ference in all these organizations.
