INTRODUCTION/RÉAMHRÁ

The events of 1916 and the decade leading to independence in 1922 was a seminal period in our history. Others are better placed to examine the political, historical and societal significance of this turbulent time: as a cultural institution it befits the National Concert Hall to reflect on the events and the intervening century through our culture, music and arts. It is a unique opportunity to look back at the past, take stock of the present and imagine the future.

Our landmark programme for Easter week, Imagining Home, is a series of seven performances involving a wide range of Irish and international musicians, artists, poets, writers and thinkers. Taking its cue from the words and ideals of the Proclamation of Independence, the series explores Ireland’s relationship with itself and the outside world in both a contemporary and historical context.

Later in the year, the National Concert Hall will be taking a look at the last 100 years of music in Composing the Island - A Century of Music in Ireland. Presented in association with Bord na Móna and RTÉ, this series will comprise six major orchestral concerts and a further twenty concerts featuring choral, instrumental, song and chamber music, giving audiences the opportunity to encounter and reflect upon the music of Irish composers between 1916 and 2016.

We will also be presenting a musical portrait of contemporary Dublin, its river and port, in a new project supported by Dublin Port. A range of contemporary singer-songwriters have been invited to respond creatively to the city a 100 years on and the result of this will be presented in concert later in the year.

With Song For ‘16, the National Concert Hall’s all-island schools project, we invite today’s school goers to write a song for a multi-cultural European Ireland.
