CONTENTS Hello and welcome to the PPE supplement.
If, last year, you asked anyone outside a very select few industries whether they knew what the acronym PPE stood for, you’d have likely received some confused looks in return. The COVID-19 crisis has changed that; personal protective equipment has entered the mainstream and it’s become an essential for everyday life, not just for the safety of employees in certain work settings.
So much has been written over recent weeks and months over the NHS’s shortage of PPE as we hit the peak of the epidemic. Various contributory factors played their role in those desperate few weeks where doctors, nurses and cleaning staff were reusing PPE day after day. In mid-April the Guardian newspaper revealed the UK government had three opportunities to join a scheme set up by the EU to buy masses of gowns, gloves and masks. Its refusal to do so, perhaps out of ideologically-driven dogma, no doubt had its part to play in the deaths of those working on the frontline.
It will come as no surprise that this supplement is heavily geared towards PPE during and after the pandemic. From Virtualstock’s reflections on where the NHS Supply Chain went wrong and what it can learn from industries that were better equipped to deal with the crisis, to SiteZone Safety’s analysis of the technology that can be used as we head back to work, there’s a range of content to enjoy in this annual edition.
