HUMAN FACTORS & ERGONOMICS

Q: ERGONOMICALLY SPEAKING, WHAT LITTLE CHANGES CAN PEOPLE MAKE TO IMPROVE

THEIR WORK DAY? We teach specific techniques that people incorporate into their daily lives:

• Self-triggering on your state of mind or body can help people recognise the warning signs before an adverse error or event takes place.

• Analysing small niggles or mistakes before they become big problems is very effective. We often get little warnings, but we also often ignore them. Switching ourselves on to these is critical.

• Looking at other people and what they are doing helps people to recognise their own behaviours, bringing things to attention that they might not have previously thought about.

• Reflecting on your habits and identifying areas for improvement is also key to long term healthy outcomes. We can often identify good habits to work on by using the two other techniques above – analysing small niggles or errors and looking at other people’s behaviours.

Q: HOW DOES THE IDEA OF BEHAVIOURAL CHANGE EXTEND BEYOND THE WORKPLACE

AND INTO PEOPLE’S PERSONAL/HOME LIVES? Getting people into good habits is more effective if it’s applied 24/7. It’s quicker, easier and more sustainable in the long term if they are being used everywhere, not just being switched on and off for work.

Since the early days of SafeStart, it was clear that people were also more likely to be engaged and take an active part in the process if the topic related to their life away from work as well as at work. From that, you

are more likely to get buy-in and the effort required to change ingrained behaviours.

Q: WHAT ARE THE CENTRAL CHALLENGES WITH INCORPORATING ERGONOMIC BEST

PRACTICE IN A WORKSPACE? The challenge lies in changing ingrained behaviours, particularly if someone has been doing the job for a long time. To get over this, you must give people a practical framework, support, space and time to practice new habits and behaviours until they become intrinsic, automatic and consistent.

Q: IS THERE A COMPANY YOU’VE ENJOYED WORKING WITH MORE THAN ANY OTHER? IF

SO, WHY? The companies who take our advice. We’ve been in this field for 20 years and have worked with thousands of clients worldwide, that experience means we know what we are talking about. But my absolute favourite clients are the ones who embrace the SafeStart concept of 24/7 safety, ‘take it home’ and get out to schools and youth groups in their local communities.

Q: WHAT’S NEXT FOR SAFESTART? WHERE WILL THE COMPANY BE HEADING OVER THE

NEXT FEW YEARS? SafeStart continues to grow, especially in Europe. Our new SafeStart For Performance course helps companies apply the same human error reduction techniques in the SafeStart programme to productivity, quality and customer service and our recently launched SafeStart for Ergonomics module is something our clients have been asking us to develop for a while now.
