BRINGING SAFETY INTO FOCUS
Prescription safety eyewear is a gamechanger for the huge number of tradespeople who are missing out on proper protection, says Specsavers, as it advises on the options in the market.
Eye injuries rank among the most common and serious accidents on work sites, yet prescription eye protection remains a blind spot in many health and safety programmes. In recent research carried out by Specsavers, more than one in three workers know someone who has suffered an eye injury at work yet, even more concerningly, a quarter of tradespeople admit they don’t consistently wear eye protection on the job.
These figures show that the issue runs deeper than simply providing safety glasses. Nearly half of tradespeople require prescription lenses to see clearly, and without access to prescription safety eyewear, many are left relying on their everyday glasses, meaning their eyes aren’t getting the protection they need. Prescription safety glasses are crucial to a health and safety package that does the job for everyone.
SAFETY, COMFORT AND STYLE Many tradespeople require safety eyewear throughout their working lives, meaning being forced to wear their regular specs (or degrading their vision by wearing non- prescription eye protection) is a constant issue and a risk to their safety. This can all change with prescription safety glasses, and there is a range of options on the market for tradespeople of all stripes.
Specsavers’ newly enhanced safety eyewear range, co- created with industry leaders Stryder Eyewear, is the latest example. Designed for the almost half of tradespeople who need prescription eyewear to see, the glasses remove the need to choose between safety and comfort. Finally giving these tradespeople the best of both worlds was the priority in the design and manufacturing process – state-of-the-art injection moulding methods have been used to create adjustable temple tips with over-moulded soft parts of enhanced comfort.
The spread of tradespeople who regularly wear safety glasses is huge, so there’s no one solution that will be right for everyone. The new safety eyewear collection is available in three tiers – classic, specialist and premium – priced at £90, £100, and £130, respectively. Customers can choose from an array of colours, including black, grey, crystal, burgundy, green, and silver. Made with sustainable materials such as G850 Rnew and Pebax Rnew 40R53, these frames align with Specsavers’ commitment to reducing environmental impact without compromising performance.
“Our research with tradespeople reveals a huge eyecare- shaped gap in personal protection equipment used on work sites,” said Dona Mclafferty, Corporate Account Manager (Safety Eyewear) at Specsavers. “Wearing glasses shouldn’t be something that endangers your eyes, and that’s why robust and comfortable prescription

safety eyewear is so important. Partnering with Stryder Eyewear means we’re working with one of the best in the business, and we’re proud that the new collection will mean a positive change for many tradespeople who are currently struggling to manage with their everyday specs.”
A CLEARER FUTURE Another way tradespeople who need vision correction manage needing safety eyewear is to balance it on top of their regular glasses. This doesn’t just cause discomfort and pose a safety risk, it can also lead to fogging. In order to remove this issue with the new collection, complex moulding construction allowed the addition of an indirect venting system and seamless side shield integration, which dramatically reduces lens fogging on premium frames.
However, in order to have the biggest impact, tradespeople need to be aware of the options out there. Currently, there’s a serious lack of awareness – only one in five tradespeople told Specsavers that they knew about prescription safety eyewear, even though 60% of them wear their everyday glasses on site.
Prescription safety eyewear is a gamechanger for the huge number of tradespeople who are missing out on proper protection. Specsavers’ latest safety eyewear range represents a significant step forward in the market, combining industry-leading safety standards with user-focused design.
