Hello and welcome to the March issue of Tomorrow’s Health & Safety.
A new report from Evac+Chair International this month has revealed how the safety of the UK's disabled workforce are at risk in an emergency. The report, Risky Business, found that one quarter of UK business decision makers do not know how many disabled and mobility impaired people there are within their organisation. Furthermore, 29% have only ‘some’ or ‘very little’ understanding of their responsibilities and one in 10 are either not prepared to safely evacuate employees needing assistance in an emergency.

Fitting then, that we have the perfect remedy. Our spotlight feature on Emergency Evacuations aims to increase awareness of this very issue. The Stair Climbing Company provides expert guidance on making sure your business is evacuation ready for disabled employees and visitors, whilst Marcella Alagona, Product Manager at Eaton explains what phasing out mercury-containing fluorescent tubes across Europe will mean for emergency lighting systems. We also have Naz Dossa, CEO of Peoplesafe, updating you with new Protect Duty legislation, that has become known as ‘Martyn’s Law’, in tribute to Martyn Hett, who was killed alongside 21 others in the 2017 Manchester Arena terrorist attack.
Elsewhere, the Health & Safety Event is set to return bigger and better than ever on 25-27 April 2023 at NEC Birmingham, and visitors are now able to register to attend for free. Over the three days, there will be 60+ hours of free CPD accredited content across five theatres, as well as live demonstrations and workshops, and exclusive networking opportunities. You can check out our full preview of the exhibition on page 12.
We’re also taking a deep dive into Cleaning & Hygiene and Mental Health & Wellbeing. The former sees CHSA explain why its Accreditation Scheme mark is the thing every health and safety professional should be looking out for, whilst in the latter, we hear from Sleep Scotland about how managers can improve workplace health and safety and boost profits by making employees’ sleep a priority.
Enjoy the issue. EDITOR’S VOICE
