NEWS EMCOR UK SCORES HAT TRICK OF

ROSPA AWARDS Adding to its record of health and safety achievements, EMCOR UK has been presented with the prestigious RoSPA Facilities Management sector award for its work with the AWE. This marks the third time in a row that the collaborative partnership has been rewarded at the annual ceremony and takes their tally of RoSPA awards to 18 in a partnership spanning more than 20 years.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Awards scheme, which receives entries from organisations around the world, recognises achievement in health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement. It is the longest running industry awards in the UK. EMCOR UK and AWE’s rigorous standards regarding health and safety are particularly significant given the demanding and technical nature of the work carried out on a day-to- day basis at AWE.

Keith Chanter, CEO of EMCOR UK, said: “While we are no strangers to winning awards for our health and safety, we are extremely pleased to win the facilities management sector award for our work with AWE. This achievement, along with the Gold Medal Award received for EMCOR UK and four of our customers, reflects how important health, safety and wellbeing is to us. It continues to be our number one priority and we are totally committed to meeting the highest standards possible, for our employees, business and supply chain partners and customers.”

AWE Site Director Mark Hedges said: “EMCOR UK’s Health and Safety record at AWE is extremely impressive and greatly supported the exceptional safety performance across our establishment. The safety initiatives implemented by EMCOR UK and AWE teams have ensured that we deliver output in a safe and secure environment. This collaborative approach to safety, originating back to 1995, is very important in the complex, secure and high regulated environment that is AWE. We look forward to sustaining our safety record with EMCOR UKs support in the future.”

EYE CARE DETECTS HIGH BLOOD

PRESSURE IN THE WORKPLACE Following the release of figures showing millions of people in the UK are living with untreated high blood pressure, Specsavers Corporate Eyecare is raising awareness of the role an eye test can play in detecting the condition.

British Heart Foundation estimates show that, in the UK, 4 million people under the age of 65 and 1.3 million people under the age of 45 are living with untreated high blood pressure.

Left untreated, high blood pressure can significantly increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. It is also associated with an increased risk of vascular dementia – a common type of dementia caused by reduced blood flow to the brain. High blood pressure rarely has noticeable symptoms, so individuals may be completely unaware they have the condition.

A simple eye examination, included as a standard part of DSE eye care or most driver or PPE eye care offerings, can reveal signs of high blood pressure. When examining the retina, an optician can see whether blood vessels are narrowed or leaking, which is a symptom of high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is often known as the silent killer. As it is often symptomless, many people do not know they are living with an increased risk factor of heart attack and stroke. Once detected the condition can

usually be easily treated with simple lifestyle changes and medication.

Jim Lythgow, Director of Strategic Alliances at Specsavers Corporate Eyecare commented: “We believe that employers are in a position to be able to make a real difference to the health of their employees. It is a win-win situation, with employees benefiting from improved health and employers benefiting from the associated improved productivity, morale and loyalty of employees. Providing eye care could save money and literally save lives.”
