HEALTH & SAFETY EVENT 2025 REVIEW KEY INSIGHT FROM ECOONLINE

At the Health & Safety event in Birmingham, EcoOnline, a global SaaS leader in EHS, lone working, ESG and chemical safety, hosted two key sessions:

FUTURE-PROOFING SAFETY CULTURE THROUGH HOP PRINCIPLES

Traditional, compliance-first safety approaches aren’t enough. To discuss the state of serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs) in the UK, Axel Elvik, SVP of Product at EcoOnline, was joined by Matt Doughty, Lead Systems & Insight Manager at Tesco. The pair discussed how Human and Organisational Performance (HOP) principles shift the focus from blame to learning, with safety “becoming second nature when it’s easy, inclusive, and focused on learning.”

Looking ahead, Axel emphasised the need for safety programmes that reflect the younger generation’s expectation for an intuitive, empowering, and supportive environment. Matt outlined the practical implementation of this approach, including simplified processes, engaging teams through daily huddles and mobile tools, and the use of data and AI to anticipate risks.

LONE WORKER TECHNOLOGIES: THE FUTURE OF SAFETY AND PRODUCTIVITY With rising risks including violence, isolation, and environmental threats, the need for proactive safety strategies to protect lone workers has never been greater. Ryan DeMelo, Product Marketing Manager at EcoOnline,

highlighted technology’s role in driving safety and productivity for this group, who now make up 22% of the UK workforce. By leveraging tools like smart geofencing, real-time risk alerts, and mobile app features, such as SOS buttons and fall detection, organisations can enhance lone worker protection and speed-up emergency response.

With over 91% of executives rating their organisations a 10/10 in lone worker safety, compared to 49% of lone workers, it’s clear that a perception gap exists between managers and frontline teams. To combat this nonalignment, Ryan highlighted the importance of centralised data and predictive insights to shift the approach from reactive to proactive safety. In the long-term, lone worker protection will require a blend of technology, training, and trust, all supported by data.
