Problems simply cannot be solved without diverse thinking and often, conflicting viewpoints. Women can bring so much to the workforce - not as an honorary male, forced to fit into an existing male environment - but as individuals with different views and opinions.
Women are generally known to be stronger than men in areas surrounding teamwork and building relationships which are crucial to success. As the past has shown us, if we want to implement any sort of gender mobility, women have to take up space and raise their voice but in order for this to be effective, men also need to be given the opportunity, and respect, to embrace flexible working arrangements, so workplaces, and society as a whole, can become more diverse.
But workplace equality is not only important for the advancement of women. Over recent years, with the

increased awareness of mental health challenges, particularly in men under the age of 50, the traditional stereotype for men is changing. No longer do we expect men to live up to a macho ‘provider’ stereotype, working long hours and spending very little time with his family.
Today our view of a positive male role model is much more aligned to equality in the workplace. Changing our gender specific stereotypes and putting equality at the heart of our workplaces also helps to create environments where both men and women feel supported and where issues such as mental health are openly tackled by employers for the betterment of the whole workforce.
For me, gender equality in the workplace is beneficial to everyone and leads to a happier and healthier society. The key is to stop thinking of it as a women’s issue.
