LIGHTING A SHINING EXAMPLE

Ansell Lighting explains to Tomorrow’s FM how its considered lighting design transformed a multi- use industrial space.

Outdated warehouse lighting is more than just inefficient. It’s often costly to run, uncomfortable to use and unsuitable for the wide range of tasks being carried out.

Modern warehouses, with their mix of storage, handling, office and break areas require lighting that is flexible, energy efficient and intelligently controlled. It must enhance user comfort and wellbeing as well as meeting operational and regulatory requirements.

This renovation project from Ansell Lighting is a shining example of how considered lighting design can transform a multi-use industrial space.

With a completely outdated and inefficient system in place, the London warehouse building needed a complete overhaul. Ansell Lighting were tasked with designing a modern solution that was more efficient and cheaper to run; that enhanced safety, staff productivity and wellbeing throughout the buildings’ diverse spaces.

After carrying out a detailed assessment of the building, its existing lighting system, day to day operational needs and long-term performance expectations, Ansell’s design team designed a highly responsive lighting scheme that has transformed the site. The bespoke design incorporates smart-controlled industrial LEDs, a comprehensive emergency lighting provision, contemporary office fittings and durable exterior lighting to ensure the project’s goals for safety, efficiency and visual quality are met across every area.

The warehouse area Sitting at the centre of the project is the expansive warehouse. The space demanded powerful, efficient and intelligently controlled lighting, for which Ansell specified its Z LED Performance high bay luminaires.

Offering excellent efficacy and high-output, uniform light, the fittings provide wide-area coverage that minimises shadows and improves visibility for operatives. Their IP65-rated construction and long service life make them a reliable choice for harsh industrial environments where durability and minimal maintenance are key.

To further enhance energy savings and unlock the full capability of the high bays, Ansell installed OCTO IP66 Smart High Bay Open Area PIR Sensors throughout the warehouse. These sensors enable smart connectivity, allowing the lighting to automatically adjust according to occupancy levels and ambient light conditions. Additional OCTO Indoor Wireless Smart Switches give staff convenient control over scenes and settings, creating an adaptable and intuitive lighting environment.

Ansell also implemented a new, fully compliant emergency lighting system within the warehouse. Guardian bulkhead units were installed along escape routes and key working zones to provide clear visibility in the event of an incident. The Hawk Universal Lithium

Emergency Kit was used to convert standard LED luminaires into dependable emergency fittings, ensuring the warehouse remains safely lit during a power outage.

Office and warehouse interface In the transitional zone where industrial and administrative areas meet, a lighting solution that balanced functionality with comfort was essential. Ansell specified the Nouline LED linear battens for this space. Delivering uniform, glare-controlled illumination, the fittings support both task-related activities and staff comfort. Their clean, modern design also integrates seamlessly between warehouse and office environments, creating a cohesive and professional appearance.

Upstairs office and reception For the first-floor office and reception areas, Ansell’s designers focused on lighting that delivered visual comfort as well as aesthetic impact. Vasco CCT Bi-Directional Suspended Linear luminaires were installed to provide upward and downward illumination, creating soft, balanced ambient light and reducing shadowing. With adjustable colour temperature settings, the Vasco fittings allow the facility to tailor light tone to time of day or activity, enhancing wellbeing and offering an impressive, welcoming environment for visitors.

Exterior lighting Outside, the warehouse facility required powerful illumination for security, staff movement and vehicle operations. Here, Ansell specified the Aztec Floodlight, chosen for its high-lumen output, slim profile and IP65 durability. The floodlights provide wide, even coverage across the building perimeter, loading bays and parking areas, supporting safe navigation after dark and helping deter unauthorised access.

This warehouse refurbishment project highlights the value of thoughtful, application-led lighting design. From smart industrial luminaires to stylish office fittings and resilient external floodlighting, every component has been carefully selected to meet the specific demands of the site. The result is a cohesive, energy-efficient lighting system that significantly improves safety, comfort and productivity across all areas of the facility.
