Legiolert by IDEXX Water
ABOUT THIS SERVICE...
IDEXX, the global leader in microbiological testing for water, has introduced Legiolert, a rapid and accurate test for Legionella pneumophila, into the UK facilities management sector.
Legiolert represents the biggest breakthrough in Legionella detection for four decades and took many years to develop. The result is the most accurate, sensitive and rapid culture method currently available. A potential life-saver, Legiolert targets and identifies Legionella pneumophila, which according to European Centers for Disease Control data, is the pathogen responsible for over 90% of cases of Legionnaires’ disease.
Company Profile
IDEXX Water is a specialist in water microbiology, providing tests that ensure the safety of drinking water and other water supplies for over two billion people in 100 countries around the world.
Legiolert uses bacterial enzyme detection technology to identify and enumerate L. pneumophila in drinking water and other building water systems. It supplies nutrients which allow any L. pneumophila cells present in a water sample to grow rapidly, and an indicator in the reagent changes colour to signal their presence.
The test is simple to use and requires minimal training and equipment to set up, giving confirmed results in seven days, around half the time of traditional agar-based methods. Legiolert simplifies and accelerates water testing, reducing risks posed by the potentially fatal Legionnaires’ disease by generating highly reliable data and enabling faster remedial action.
Legiolert is selective, sensitive and suitable for on-site testing in hospitals, public and healthcare buildings, cruise ships, and in traditional laboratories.

Legiolert detects Legionella pneumophila and offers sensitivity, specificity, low false positive and negative rates with no confirmation steps required.
A recent published study by independent consultants found the Legiolert method to be significantly more sensitive for the recovery of L. pneumophila for 100 mL samples compared to the ISO 11731-2 method, and concluded that Legiolert could be an acceptable alternative and potentially superior alternative to the combined ISO 11731-2/ISO 11731 testing procedure.
