What makes a great user experience?

Chris Wakefield, Managing Director UK & Ireland at GOJO Industries-Europe, discusses how businesses can offer a positive washroom experience and why it’s so important.

As we live life with COVID, good hygiene remains our best line of defence. Hand hygiene in particular prevents germs from leaving the washroom and being transferred to other parts of the building.

From a commercial perspective, it’s good for business. First impressions count – the humble washroom often influences the customers’ perception of the building as a whole, and if it doesn’t meet their high expectations they’re unlikely to return or recommend.

When it comes to cleanliness and hygiene, consumers’ expectations today are higher than ever, so it really pays to offer the best user experience possible within your budget. In doing so, businesses can boost compliance too.

Design and layout

Fitting the correct dispensers can make a world of difference to the user’s washroom journey. Think about how people will move around the space, and fit equipment accordingly – for example, installing slim, wall-mounted dispensers in smaller washrooms. After all, users are far more likely to abandon best practice in cramped and congested conditions.

Touch-free dispensers can also help to prevent congestion and queues. Highly intuitive, they release the exact dose of product required each time, making handwashing a smooth and simple process whilst reducing the potential for mess or wastage. They also help increase compliance. As people better understand the chain of infection, many have become reluctant to touch dispensers and dryers if they don’t look clean.

Maintenance

Key to providing a welcoming washroom experience is ensuring that the equipment is in good working order, well-

stocked, and easy to maintain. Once again, opting for the right dispensers can help. Making an investment in quality hand hygiene products can add long-term value, whilst also improving the facility's overall appearance and providing peace of mind.

Reliable PURELL dispensing systems, for example, provide durability year after year, help reduce messes, and require less maintenance. Ergonomically designed, they are developed to be cleaned easily with flat, smooth surfaces, and, importantly, easy to replenish. The PURELL ES8 Dispenser features an innovative refill design that enables operatives to monitor product levels at a glance. After all, hand hygiene practice is impossible if the dispenser has run empty.

It also boasts an integrated battery, ensuring continuous touch-free dispensing, and eliminates any worries about the battery running out and needing to be replaced.

Protecting skin health

Proven efficacy to key standards EN14476, EN1500, and EN1276 are a prerequisite, but soaps and sanitisers should also be fast-acting because people don’t always spend the optimum time washing or sanitising their hands. Secondly, and importantly, businesses should opt for products that have been designed with skin health in mind, like PURELL Advanced Hygienic Hand Rub or PURELL HEALTHY SOAP.

Dermatologically tested and remarkably gentle to skin, even with frequent use, its ‘CLEAN RELEASE Technology’ (CRT) enables users to achieve a deeper clean. It also rinses fast, saving an average of 22L of water per refill, which in turn helps support businesses’ sustainability goals – without them having to make any additional effort.

Product choice is crucial, because those that irritate skin or offer a less than optimum experience may result in users abandoning hand hygiene altogether, therefore increasing the risk of germ transmission.

Finally, if people have not washed their hands properly, bacteria and viruses can be spread onto the door handle and other surfaces that they touch when they leave the room. Offering another opportunity for hand hygiene, by positioning additional sanitising dispensers adjacent to the washroom doors, can help prevent this.

By making a few smart changes, businesses can optimise their washroom hygiene levels, resulting in healthier environments, and ultimately, enhanced reputations.
