WASHROOMS & BATHROOMS
Old-style C-fold towel dispensers tend to generate a great deal of waste because it is difficult to take only one towel out from the unit. This results in each user removing clumps of towels at a time and the unwanted towels being discarded.
Many of today’s hand towel dispensers are engineered specifically to prevent over-consumption and reduce waste. For example, the Tork PeakServe Continuous Hand Towel Dispenser gives out sheets of paper one at a time so that washroom visitors are discouraged from taking out more than they need. And like many Tork dispensers, the unit has been certified as being “easy to use” by the Swedish Rheumatism Association which makes it particularly suitable for use by the elderly and frail.
Jumbo toilet rolls are oſten provided in large institutions because these ensure a long-lasting supply of paper. However, it is all too easy for the user to tear off an extra-long strip of paper from a jumbo roll which leads to over-consumption and even potentially blocked toilets as well. And it can be hard for the cleaner to predict when the paper is likely to run out which means that he or she might be tempted to change a roll before it is entirely empty, discarding and ultimately wasting the remainder.
The Tork SmartOne Twin Mini Toilet Roll System reduces consumption up to 40% compared with jumbo roll dispensers since it delivers the paper one sheet at a time. A second roll may be inserted into the unit at any time to fit in with the cleaner’s schedule. And the paper may be removed in a single-handed action which makes it easy to use for residents and convenient for carers.
New from Essity is Tork OptiServe a toilet paper system that allows managers to use the same coreless toilet paper refills across an entire facility. The product has been designed to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact in the washroom.
Soap is also oſten wasted in the care home washroom – particularly if it is supplied in the form of a bar or in a bulk-fill container. Soap bars will be discarded once they have become cracked and grimy and bulk-fill containers need to be manually topped up, leading to wasteful spills. Many basic soap dispenser models are also inclined to leak, again leading to waste. And these models also make it easy for users to take out more soap than they need which results in over-consumption.
Many of today’s more sophisticated soap dispensers house a hygienically-sealed, non-drip cartridge and are designed to deliver liquid or foam soap in single doses to keep costs down. For example, the Tork Foam Soap Dispenser gives out measured doses of soap and serves up to 1,650 visitors between refills. And the sealed cartridge can be replaced in seconds and is non-drip which means that none of the soap is wasted.
Care for the planet is becoming an increasingly high priority as the effects of climate change become ever-harder to ignore. It therefore makes good sense for care homes nationwide to do whatever they can to cut consumption and reduce waste – while also fulfilling other sustainability goals such as ensuring the wellbeing of residents and improving the working lives of carers.
