Editor’s Voice
Hello and welcome to the February/March issue of Tomorrow’s Care.
On 15 February 2022, several professional roles were added to the Home Office Skilled Worker list of occupations to make it easier for care organisations to recruit qualified health and care workers from overseas. The introduction of these measures was temporary – they were designed to help employers meet demand for care services when there was a workforce shortage. As Amy Stokes, a partner specialising in business immigration and employment law at Forbes Solicitors, points out in her feature this month, the situation has not improved in any tangible sense. Stokes and others are calling for an extension to the 15 February 2023 deadline so care providers can reach more skilled and qualified workers from overseas to alleviate the immediate labour needs.
But issues with recruitment and retention are just the tip of the iceberg. Keeping those in the industry is also imperative. One way to ensure those entering the industry stay in the industry is through Training & Education. Our spotlight on the topic this month sees Adrian Grove, Business Development Director at Qube Learning, explain how alternative pathways to work can lead a new generation into the care sector. He takes a deep dive into Apprenticeships in the sector and says why for many they’re a great way to kickstart careers.
Elsewhere, our Technology & Soſtware focus is led by Tork’s Liam Mynes asking how cleaning and hygiene technologies can improve outcomes and compensate for staff shortages in care homes, and Pinpoint discusses the role its safety system protected staff and residents at St. Brigid’s hospital in Galway.
Enjoy the issue.
