COVER STORY

• Employee wellbeing – support managers to help their teams thrive and manage issues such as workplace stress.

• Career development and progression – maximise opportunities to develop skills and careers.

• Consult employees – ensure employees have a voice through regular performance conversations, attitude surveys and grievance systems.

Apprenticeships can be key to improving talent retention and hiring apprentices brings a number of benefits to employers in any sector:

• 80% of employers have maintained or improved future skills in the business.

• 70% of employers have seen improvements in the goods and services they offer.

• 66% of employers have experienced improved staff morale.

Studies have shown that apprentices themselves are 85% more likely to stay in employment post qualification with a staggering 64% staying with the same employer.

WHY DO APPRENTICES STAY?

From the offset, the apprentice is valued and invested in by their employer during the scheme, preparing them fully for a career in the company. Candidates themselves are much more driven as many have specifically sought out an apprenticeship, particularly at entry-level, and are likely to be focused with a clear intention to stay within the business.

Apprenticeships are an opportunity for development, mapped to specific roles they show learners a clear progression route. With a structure in place, apprenticeships create a real sense of confidence in the learner which is an essential part of the learning process and offers an understanding of the progression route meaning that managers are not only ready to step up, but also alleviate the anxiety of the additional responsibilities.

You need to develop a workforce that not only fills the current skills gap but that are also matched to the future needs of your company. Apprenticeships are key to keeping up with the ever-evolving world of work and brining fresh new talent into your business.

By outsourcing your apprenticeship recruitment through a reputable training provider such as Paragon Skills, you are directly benefiting from their recruitment expertise.

ABBOTS CARE CASE STUDY One of Abbots Care’s core values is to support our workforce in development and career progression. From the early days of the business in 1995, we had the vision that if we employed talented people and provided good learning and development opportunities and qualifications, we would be able to retain and grow a skilled team.

We found it quite challenging to attract applicants to our Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care. Our sector is underrepresented from the under 30 demographic. Many of the staff employed weren’t at the stages in their lives where undertaking a qualification fitted in with their work/life balance. We decided to look at how we could attract younger people into other departments of the business and use the funds we accumulated through the Apprenticeship Levy.

Jake Beels and Monique Eyanga joined the Finance Team at Abbots Care as Accounts Assistants. Their ambition is to become qualified accountants. Our Finance Manager, Marie Ostler, a qualified and experienced accountant, supports and coaches them both with their studies. Both apprentices spend time at college to study each week and Marie ensures that they take part in a wide variety of work so that can apply their studies to practice.

Monique should fully qualify this year and Jake by the end of next year. They have added real value to the company as they have progressed contributing to Abbots Care’s growth plans.

Monique said: “I have really enjoyed my apprenticeship journey with Abbots Care as I have been given the opportunity to start my career in accounting and finance. I can apply my studies to my work which enhances my understanding of what I have been taught. As time goes by, I have been given new projects to work on which have added to my skillset. I have a great support system at work which keeps me motivated to progress my career”.

Jake commented: “Becoming an apprentice at Abbots Care has allowed to me to have a hands-on experience of working whilst having the flexibility of studying for my qualification at the same time”.

“One of the great things about having Monique and Jake as apprentices is that we can adapt their training to the needs of the business,” said Marie. “We are developing them to be skilled, ambitious and highly motivated. It is very rewarding to see them grow, pass their exams and be part of the success of Abbots Care.”
