CARE PLANNING Keeping Up with Caretech

It has never been more important to stay up to date with technology trends, says Amrit Dhaliwal, Founder and Chief Executive of home care provider Walfinch.

When I started my first home care business in 2012, I was shocked to find that the care industry was around a decade behind in technology. Many care providers were still dependent on

paper-based systems, and carers turned up on doorsteps clutching clipboards of flapping papers.

Now technology has transformed most care company head offices and many carers are equipped with smart phone apps that make information about clients easy to access, observations and activities easy to record, and allow instant communications with clients’ families, GPs and the rest of the care team.

Technology is now all-but essential to the successfully delivery of high-quality client-centred care, while maintaining efficiency and monitoring compliance. It can be a huge differentiator.

At Walfinch we are rolling out a rostering soſtware called Birdie, which does all this, and more. Its evidence supports outstanding CQC inspections, which attracts more clients – and more franchisees.

STAY ON TOP

New types of caretech are announced frequently but care providers who buy without in-depth research risk wasting money on tech that may be unnecessary, hard to operate, unsuitable for their needs or unacceptable to clients.

Most care providers should now have someone to evaluate new caretech. I love discovering and evaluating new technology, but if the prospect makes you despair, consider appointing a technology project officer to look at what's available and how it could help your business.
